Advice for life

I often get asked for career advice in classes, during presentations, etc. I believe there are certain things that will take you far: hard work and dedication, a sense of humor and taking the occasional risk. I recently came across this amazing blog from Paul Coelho’s Blog with Einstein’s very own life lessons. I couldn’t have said it better, enjoy!

Awhile back, I did a blog post on the ever adorable Vanessa Hudgens’ decision to lop off her real locks for a movie role… Into a short pixie cut that veered somewhere between soccer mom territory and total  girly cuteness. Well, folks, Hudgens is at it again, taking method acting very seriously and changed up her hair again for a movie role.

This time around, she’s an ashy blond with extensions for a new flick she’s doing with Selena Gomez. While the color isn’t awful on Hudgens’ olve skin tone and the length makes her look young and fresh, I’m kind of digging the shorter hairstyle more (when styled nicely). What do our blog readers think of Ms. Hudgens new honey hued hair?

One thing this ‘do does have going for it, however, is that they got the shade of blonde right for Hudgens coloring. She’s olve skinned, but on the cooler side and this cooler blonde complements that.

So, there are women who dress for other women and fashion and there are also women who dress for men and solely to look traditionally sexy. Think Sarah Jessica Parker versus Pam Anderson, who are on very opposite ends of the style spectrum.

It’s no surprise that men have very specific ideas about what constitutes feminine beauty, after all. Allure magazine ran an interesting article about the beauty “mistakes” women make in trying to appeal to men that caught my attention today. Apparently, men hate dark, crazy or neon nails and surprisingly, Kardashian worthy extensions and fake lashes according to the mag. Apparently, they do want a lady to be feminine (no shocker there) and take care of themselves, but still be a natural beauty. A tall order for some beauty addicts, but very much in line with my own easy wear philosophy. Check it out here.

It wouldn’t be this time of year without an Oscars fashion rundown, of course, done by yours truly. But with awards season in full spring (see the Grammys), it can get a little tedious to constantly hear about the best dressed celebs at these soirees when most of aren’t walking red carpets on a regular basis. Instead, I’ve chosen to highlight a few key trends from Oscars night and explain how to incorporate them into your everyday wardrobe. Take a peeksie below and let me know what you think…

One of my favorite fashion elements of the night was the reintroduction of color into night and formal wear. Two pretty ladies, Michelle Williams and Melissa McCarthy, wore equally pretty frocks in a stunning and vibrant shade of coral, a trendy shade that most of us can pull of thankfully. Williams’ was a deep, rouge tinged dress by Louis Vuitton paired with another great and current trend, the peplum. While the combination of the two is a bit much for mere mortals to wear, that orangey red shade is a surefire winner to add life and color to your complexion. If it’s too bold for you, try coral accessories like a gauzy scarf or cute ballet flats in the color. Or you can try a more subdued shade in the coral family, like McCarthy’s regal Marina Rinaldi number.

On the other end of the spectrum, white was a classic and icily elegant dress choice for two of the evening’s most stylish fashionistas, Rooney Mara and Gwyneth Paltrow. Mara opted for a sculptural creation in lace that was edgy but soft at the same time, while Paltrow went all out old Hollywood in a simple dress and matching jacket. White is a no brainer to wear in spring and summer, but think beyond the white shirt or little white dress and consider white pants as a casual alternative. With the right fit, they can be a wardrobe staple in many a woman’s closet.

Lastly, a telling beauty trend of the evening was the lack of extensions on the red carpet and the reemergence of short hair as a style do for night. Viola Davis, Rose Byrne and Anna Farris all rocked the style and looked stunning. Davis left her sassy crop in it’s natural texture, while Faris and Byrne opted for sleek, power bobs punctuated with bangs, a wonderful way to wear a longer short do in a way that looks elegant. And, of course, for the brave, there’s always the unstoppable Michelle Williams’ girly pixie worn with an ultra glam and femme dress. All these ‘dos can work wonderfully on any woman, when paired with a great stylist who knows what their doing.

As I’ve mentioned, one of the biggest complaints I hear from clients is that they don’t know how to make fine or thinning hair fuller. Aside from using the right products and getting a little help from extensions every once in a while, an often overlooked thing fine haired ladies can look into is using hair color to create the appearance of depth and dimensions in locks, thereby making it look fuller.

Us pros often call this process using multi-tonal color. Highlights should blend seamlessly into one another, but there should also be some contrast between the colors used because this will break up the hair and make it look thicker. I like using honeyed shades, or something equally warm toned, for this approach. If you stylist doesn’t know the phrase “multi-tonal”, explain the general concept to her. Any good colorist worth her dye will catch on to the general idea. Rachel Bilson displays this concept flawlessly here.

As a guest poster today, I’m here to write about my wonderful experience at the Patrick Melville Salon in NYC yesterday. I had the opportunity to fill in for a (real) model who couldn’t make it to a presentation to show off Ron’s awesome Invisi-Tab hair extensions. Luckily, I know people who know people and had the right hair type to fill in, and so I did.

The amazing stylist, Jared, expertly matched my hair to a particular set of extensions and painlessly applied them and then cut me some bangs and layers. The whole process was easy as pie and fun to boot. The end result is more stylish and sexy than I’ve ever looked and that’s mostly in part to the Invisi-Tabs and Jared’s great presence and artistry. They look natural and real and feel light as air, making caring for my fine, wavy hair easier than ever. I can’t recommend the salon and the extensions enough. The hallmark of a good stylist and product is one that makes you feel like yourself, but better and these guys accomplished this. Just check out my before and after.

Ah, red lips. Known for their perking up powers on otherwise tired faces, wearing a rouge lip color also glamorizes any outfit. It also can enhance the depth of darker skin and punch up a paler pallor. So, what are you waiting for? Most likely, you’re on the fence about choosing the correct red for your coloring and style.

Selecting the perfect scarlet lip shade can be easy if you know your undertones though. In a nutshell, blue or cool undertones look bext in cool hued reds with hints of blue or purple in them. Women with warm undertones can rock, well, warmer shades of red with hints of orange in them. If you’re unsure if you have cool or warm undertones, picture yourself wearing gold or silver jewelry. Which hue of baubles brings out your skin tone more? If you’re ravishing in gold, you’re warm, and, of course, if silver’s better, you’re cool toned.

Next up, is choosing the lip color formulation you want to wear. Generally, creamy lipsticks work well on dehydrated pouts because they add richness. On plumper lips, they also downplay any overly largeness. That being said, gloss works well on the thin lipped because it fleshes them out ( it also works great on the ultra trendy, who won’t mind reapplying their color every now and again). Now, pick your poison and pucker up!

The Grammys have come and gone by now, and the verdict is in on who was the best dress lady at the swank soiree (at least in my opinion). Surprisingly, the usually not elegant Paris Hilton, was a knockout in a body conscious, high necked number by Basil Soda. The pale, silvery color was divine on her and the body conscious and old Hollywood style frock played up Hilton’s patrician beauty to a tee and suited her long, lanky frame.

Next up is Katy Perry, who recently debuted a short, Smurf blue bob (which inexplicably looks amazing on her) and donned a matching, vintage inspired frock that was controversial but adorable. The retro, cutesie vibe of the gown totally worked with her own playful style and the blue color palette played up her pretty eyes. Of course, the cinched and beribboned waist called attention to her fab hourglass figure as well.

Lastly, the sublime Adele looked ravishing in a sparkly and fitted, black evening number by Armani Prive, perhaps a nod to the recent passing of Whitney Houston. Her tumbling, blonde waves were a nice change from her usual ginger tinged beehive look. The three quarter length, mod dress also worked with her sexy, ’60s inspired makeup.

Diana Agron of Glee fame seems to have it all. She’s a new age Grace Kelly, with talent and icy, blonde beauty to spare, plus loads of style know how. What she didn’t have at one point was interesting hair, however. Her dirty blonde locks were long layered and fringed, in the typical starlet/cheerleader mold.

Now, Agron has cropped her hair to a shortish bob with bangs that is heavily layered and seems to have emerged from under Lea Michele’s shadow as a beauty and style icon in her own right. The lovely short ‘do calls attention to her pretty, even features and gives her a spunky sex appeal. To go along with the new hairstyle, the Glee star has started sporting boldly colored clothes and taken on more fashion forward projects, like gracing the cover of NYLON magazine in a mod, Twiggy inspired look. What do you think of Agron’s on trend bob?
